I hold a PhD in mechanical engineering and I also write software. Before you buy a machine or fund a prototype, I check that it works, through a feasibility study backed by simulation, measurements or a prototype. I do not sell equipment, so I can tell you plainly whether the project stands up.

At the end you get a reasoned answer (yes, no, or yes under certain conditions) and the demonstrator it rests on. That can be a simulation, a digital twin, a test bench or a prototype, depending on what needs checking.
